By Jude Anike
The Commander of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Enugu State, Mr. Abdul Abdullahi says the command arrested the Enugu APC guber candidate, Uchenna Nnaji along with other 16 drug dealers and users yesterday in Enugu.
Abdullahi said this Today in Enugu during a sensitization program and town hall meeting on ‘Preventing Drug Challenges in Enugu State: The Need to Mobilise Stakeholders for Collective Action’.
The commander said that the suspects were made up of 12 males and four females.
He mentioned the substances that were seized from the suspects to include 2.5 tons of cannabis sativa, 76.5 grams of cocaine, 119.45 grams of methamphetamine (Mkpurummiri), 30 kilograms of psychotropic substances, and 3.44 grams of heroin.
According to him, one of the suspects named Joseph Omeruo was arrested with parcels of cocaine and other illicit drugs in Imo State on Sunday. The suspect during the investigation revealed that their drug kingpin is Mr.Uchenna Nwakaibeya Nnaji whose house our members raided yesterday and discovered a separate room that was fully packed with all manner of illicit substances.
The agency expressed shock that the so-called Nnaji is a guber candidate of a party in Enugu. They revealed that while trying to effect the arrest, his security men and bodyguards tried to prevent the arrest but were overpowered by the joint team of other security personnel accompanying their men to the operation.
Nnaji was said to have distributed 55.8 tons of cannabis within the South Eastern States from the period of February 12 to February 18, decrying that it is threatening the foundation of the society.
”Enugu state was rated as having the second highest estimated drug abuse prevalence in the region according to a 2018 research by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. Most persons who use drugs now will later regret it. Some remain unemployed, unemployable, mentally damaged, and die early in some cases. I, therefore, appeal to political, community, and religious leaders to join us in this campaign to save our youths from this evil that has bedeviled our society,” says the commandant.
